π‘ Quick Answer
Yes β Google Health and Apple Health now sync. Google Health is the new name (since May 19, 2026) for the Fitbit app. From August 3, 2026, version 5.05 on iPhone syncs two-way with Apple Health: steps, heart rate, sleep, workouts, weight and more flow in both directions. Health Connect is a different thing: Android's on-device data hub.
- Turn it on: Google Health β Connections β Apps and services β Apple Health β Get started β Agree.
- Read-only: HRV and skin temperature come into Google Health but aren't written back to Apple Health.
- Apple Health β Android: still no native bridge, so use a cross-platform app with its own cloud account.
- Cost: Apple Health and the Google Health app are free; Google Health Premium (Gemini coach) starts at $9.99/month.
Your phone and wearables collect a lot of health data: steps, heart rate, sleep, HRV, blood oxygen and more. Where that data lives decides which apps can use it. In 2026 there are three names to keep straight: Apple Health (iPhone), Health Connect (Android) and Google Health (the renamed Fitbit app, on both).
Google Health vs Apple Health vs Health Connect: What's the Difference?

Google Health or Apple Health: Which Should You Use?
On an iPhone you no longer have to pick one. Since August 2026 the two sync, so the practical choice is which app you open every day and which one holds your long-term record.
- Use Apple Health as your main record if you wear an Apple Watch, want everything stored on your iPhone, or want your health records from participating providers in the same place. It is free and has no subscription tier.
- Use Google Health as your main app if you wear a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, want AI coaching (the Gemini coach comes with Google Health Premium, from $9.99/month), or move between iPhone and Android.
- Use both if you own devices from each side. Turn on the sync below and set a source order in Apple Health so steps and sleep are not counted twice.
- On Android Apple Health is not available, so the choice is Google Health for the app and Health Connect as the layer that shares data between apps.
Does Google Health Sync With Apple Health?
Yes. For years Fitbit had no native Apple Health sync, and iPhone users relied on third-party bridge apps. That changed on August 3, 2026, when Google Health version 5.05 for iPhone added two-way Apple Health sync.
| Direction | Data types |
|---|---|
| Both ways (Google Health β Apple Health) | Steps, distance, floors, active calories, VO2 max, exercise sessions and routes, sleep sessions and stages, heart rate, resting heart rate, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, body temperature, blood glucose, weight, body fat, nutrition, water, mindfulness, cycle tracking |
| Read-only (Apple Health β Google Health) | Heart rate variability (HRV), skin temperature |
How to sync Google Health to Apple Health (iPhone)
- Update the Google Health app to version 5.05 or later.
- Tap Connections β Apps and services, then under "Add connections" tap Apple Health and Get started.
- On the "Sync Google Health with Apple Health" page tap Agree, then tap Turn All Categories On or tick specific categories and tap Allow. Tap Done. If a "New data types available" alert appears later, review and grant permissions for the new types.
- The same connection also brings Apple Health data, including Apple Watch data, into Google Health.
Avoid double-counting: if you wear both an Apple Watch and a Fitbit, set the source order in the Health app (Browse β a data type β Data Sources & Access β Edit). Apple Health then knows which device wins when both record steps or sleep.
Requirements and limits: you need an iPhone on iOS 16.4 or later. Google Health reads and shows the last three months of your Apple Health history, not everything older. If you reinstall the app you have to reconnect and grant the permissions again.
What about Android?
On Android, Google Health uses Health Connect, so anything it records is available to other Health Connect apps such as Samsung Health or UltraFit360, once you grant permission. Google documents Connections β Partner apps only for this Health Connect connection on Android, not for Apple Health. Apple Health doesn't exist on Android, so there is still no direct Apple Health β Android sync.
Apple Health vs Google Fit: Is Google Fit Still an Option?
Not for long. In May 2026 Google said Google Fit will shut down and be replaced by the Google Health app by the end of 2026, with a tool to move your Fit data across. The Google Fit developer APIs also reach end of service in 2026, and Health Connect has taken over as the way Android apps share health data.
So the comparison that matters now is Apple Health against Google Health and Health Connect, covered above. If you still have years of history in Google Fit, export a copy through Google Takeout before the shutdown so nothing depends on the migration going smoothly.
What is Apple Health?
Apple Health (previously HealthKit) is Apple's centralised health data platform on iPhone. It acts as a hub β collecting data from your Apple Watch, third-party apps, and manual entries into one unified health record.
- Built into every iPhone (iOS 8+)
- Deep integration with Apple Watch for continuous monitoring
- Supports over 100 health data types
- On-device processing β data stays on your phone by default
- Third-party apps can read AND write data (with user permission)
What is Google Health Connect?
Health Connect is Google's on-device health data hub for Android. It replaced Google Fit's data APIs, launched as a standalone app in 2022 and became built into Android 14+. It isn't the same as the Google Health app, which is a consumer app that uses Health Connect on Android.
- Available on Android 9+ (as an app) and built into Android 14+
- Works with Wear OS, Samsung Galaxy Watch, Fitbit, and other Android wearables
- Supports over 80 health data types
- Granular permission controls per data type
- Third-party apps can read AND write data (with user permission)

Apple Health vs Health Connect: Core Differences in 2026
As we navigate 2026, the gap between Apple Health and Health Connect has closed significantly, but core differences remain:
- Ecosystem Lock-in: Apple Health is bound to iOS and the Apple Watch ecosystem. Health Connect is shared across Android, so apps such as Google Health (Fitbit), Samsung Health and many third-party trackers can write to the same on-device database.
- API Accessibility: Health Connect provides a more streamlined API for developers, making it easier for third-party apps to integrate quickly.
- Cloud Syncing: Apple Health syncs seamlessly across your iCloud-connected devices (iPad, Mac). Health Connect is primarily device-bound, though Google One backups can restore it.
Pros and Cons: Ecosystem Breakdown
Apple Health
- Pro: Unmatched integration with Apple Watch and iOS.
- Pro: Automatic iCloud syncing and backup.
- Pro: Handles highly sensitive clinical records and ECG data natively.
- Con: Locked entirely into the Apple ecosystem (no Android support).
Google Health Connect
- Pro: Hardware agnosticβworks with Samsung, Pixel Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, etc.
- Pro: Simplifies Android development, meaning more apps support it.
- Con: Still catching up to Apple Health in terms of deep medical record integrations.
- Con: Device-bound by default; requires Google One backups to restore on a new phone.
Wearable Compatibility Guide (2026)
Which wearables work best with which platform? Here is the current landscape:
- Apple Watch: Exclusive to Apple Health. The deepest integration available on iOS.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch & Pixel Watch (Wear OS): Native, deep integration with Health Connect.
- Fitbit and Pixel Watch (Google Health app): Write to Health Connect on Android and, since August 2026, sync two-way with Apple Health on iPhone.
- Garmin, Oura Ring and WHOOP: Each publishes data lists for both Apple Health and Health Connect; Garmin's sharing is one-way. COROS documents Apple Health data types and lists Health Connect without naming data types.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Health sync with Apple Health?
Yes. Since August 3, 2026, the Google Health app on iPhone (version 5.05 or later) syncs two-way with Apple Health. Steps, distance, floors, active calories, VO2 max, workouts and routes, sleep and sleep stages, heart rate, resting heart rate, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, blood glucose, weight, body fat, nutrition, water and cycle tracking sync both ways. HRV and skin temperature are read-only: Google lists them among the types Google Health can read from Apple Health but not among those it writes. Mindfulness is written to Apple Health.
How do I sync Google Health to Apple Health?
Update Google Health to version 5.05 or later on your iPhone, go to Connections, then Apps and services, tap Apple Health under Add connections, tap Get started, then tap Agree on the Sync Google Health with Apple Health page. Choose Turn All Categories On or tick specific categories, tap Allow, then tap Done. If a New data types available alert appears later, review and grant permissions for the new types. Google documents Partner apps only for Health Connect on Android.
Can Google Health write to Apple Health?
Yes. Before August 2026 Fitbit data could only reach Apple Health through third-party sync apps. Google Health now writes Fitbit and Pixel Watch data such as steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts directly into Apple Health on iPhone.
What is the difference between Google Health and Health Connect?
Google Health is an app: it is what the Fitbit app was renamed to in May 2026, and it shows your Fitbit or Pixel Watch data with an optional Gemini-powered coach in Google Health Premium. Health Connect is the data layer built into Android 14 and later that lets health apps share data on the phone. On Android, Google Health reads and writes through Health Connect; on iPhone, it syncs with Apple Health.
Can I sync Apple Health with an Android phone?
Not directly. Apple Health only exists on iPhone and Health Connect only exists on Android, so there is no native phone-to-phone bridge. To move data between the two, use an app that runs on both platforms and syncs through its own cloud account, such as Google Health, Strava, or UltraFit360.
Can you use Google Health with an Apple Watch?
Indirectly. Apple Watch writes its data to Apple Health, and Google Health on iPhone can read heart rate, workouts, sleep and other metrics from Apple Health once you allow it. Apple Watch data then appears in Google Health alongside any Fitbit data.
Why isn't Apple Health syncing my steps to my fitness app?
This is almost always a permissions issue. Go to Settings, then Health, then Data Access & Devices, tap your fitness app, and check that reading Steps and Workouts is allowed. Also make sure Background App Refresh is on for the app.
Is Google Health better than Apple Health?
Neither is better for everyone. Google Health is stronger on AI coaching, through the Gemini coach in Google Health Premium, and it works on both iPhone and Android. Apple Health is free with no subscription, keeps data on your iPhone and works best with an Apple Watch. On an iPhone you can run both, because they have synced two-way since August 2026.
Is Google Fit being replaced by Google Health?
Yes. Google announced in May 2026 that Google Fit will shut down and be replaced by the Google Health app by the end of 2026, with a tool to migrate Fit data. Health Connect is now the way Android apps share health data with each other.
How do I force Health Connect to sync with Samsung Health?
Open Health Connect (Settings, then Security & privacy, then Health Connect), go to App permissions and check that Samsung Health has all the permissions you need. Opening the Samsung Health app usually triggers a background sync to Health Connect.
How UltraFit360 Uses Your Health Data
UltraFit360 doesn't just read your data β it analyses it to give you actionable insights:
The SSR Score (Strain / Stress / Recovery)
Every morning, UltraFit360 calculates three scores from your health data:
